Defensive driving (also known as advanced driving) is about ‘reading’ the road to avoid accidents and conflicts with other road users. Effective observations, anticipation, planning and control are all part of defensive driving. Defensive driving is more advanced and will help you drive more safely on the roads.
Advance - Driver Training specialises in defensive or advanced driving and will coach you to a high level of competency to make you a safer driver.
Effective observations is about identifying potential hazards in the driving environment and adapting the driving for the conditions. The earlier you can observe a potential hazard, then the earlier you can reduce the hazard.
Good anticipation requires you as a driver to identify and prioritise what could potentially happen from observing a hazard. Anticipating a hazard can give you more time to react to a hazard and deal with it calmly and safely.
Planning involves using the information from first observing the hazard and anticipating what may or may not happen and deciding what to do i.e. brake.
Staying in control will give you full control of your vehicle and avoids conflict with other road users. Patience and anticipation is essential to avoid any hostility with other road users.
