Types of electric vehicles:
Battery electric vehicle - these vehicles are powered by 100% electric with zero tailpipe emissions. Typical range is approximately 100 - 200 miles (depending on make and model of the car, some makes and models can exceed this distance on a single charge).
Plug in hybrid electric vehicles - these vehicles or cars have a battery, electric drive motor and an internal combustion engine. Plug in hybrid electric vehicles can be driven just on the electric battery, internal combustion motor, or both. Driving just on the electric power may have a range of around 30 miles, the batteries would require charging regularly, depending on how much driving is undertaken.
Extended range electric vehicles - these vehicles have a range of up to 150 - 300 miles. Extended range electric vehicles have a battery, electric drive motor and a small petrol / diesel generator (acts as a generator when the battery power is reduced).
There are a number of ways to drive an electric vehicle for economy to get more mileage out of the batteries i.e. improving observations, anticipation, driving style, also being more aware of what ancillaries are used that can use a lot of power. The course is 1 hour and is subsidised by the Department for Transport, therefore, training would be at a reduced cost for the private sector. The course would be offered free to the public sector, registered charities or non - for profit organisations.
